Principal’s Message….

Kia ora families, I hope everyone is managing to maintain some semblance of normality amidst what can only be described as difficult and trying times. Schools throughout the country are battling with various levels of the pandemic, fortunately, we seem to be faring well at Pirinoa, our pupils are AMAZING at adapting to learning with masks and our staff are providing interesting and varied programmes with plenty of mask breaks.
An update on projects around the school, the covered area between Room 2 and the main building IS happening, we have been advised that it should be underway before Easter, this is an Archgola Structure with covered sides, fingers crossed it will be in for us to enjoy in the winter months. The lighting in all learning areas of the school will be upgraded to LEDs and rooms will have acoustic tiling fitted to the ceilings to improve the quality of the sound, reducing reverberation and background noise. This will be taking place around June/July, the disruption will be minimal to learning. The proposed remodelling of Room 3 and what is currently the library, will begin after that. It’s exciting as these learning spaces will be getting a significant upgrade and modified to enhance our students

Thanks to these amazing people in our community:
  • The Lake Ferry Hotel who have generously provided sponsorship for several students to attend Jill’s Swim School this term.
  • Ants Holland, a local electrician for donating his time to do some electrical work around the school.
  • Sara Sutherland and Aaron Donges for the organising and erecting of the new Shade sail in the pool area.
We look forward to seeing you on Friday the 4th for our Swim Fiesta, weather permitting of course, details of this are in this newsletter.

Awards this Week:
Room 1 – Hadley Donges and Axel Portas for showing our school value of Consideration by caring for others.
Room 2 – Mataaria Te Whare – for being kind, considerate and helping others.
Jadson Gardner – for working hard and staying on task and also always having a smile on his face.
Room 3 – Kendra Wells – for helping others without being prompted and Jesse Hedgecock – for mastering his senior responsibilities.

Have a great week, stay safe
Ngā mihi nui,

Our reading challenge is underway, who will get to 100 books first??

Our new house group token system, it’s going to be close…..

Room 1 News

In Room 1 we have been learning about keeping healthy, we have been learning about the importance of teeth brushing.

We have been using the science kit to explore our senses, we tested our taste buds to see if we could work out what colour a jelly bean was while being blindfolded.

Room 2 News

In Room 2, we have started our water safety inquiry. We have been learning about the risks at different bodies of water and how we can be safe around them.

This week, Room 2 also showed Miss Excell around the school’s orchid and we found some amazing grapes to eat! Yum!

Room 3 News

Room 3 have rocketed right back into their learning routines. We’ve set up our reading, maths, writing, spelling and inquiry programs and have been creating some incredible art pieces on Thursday afternoons. One of our new programs involves breaking down the skills needed in writing to create better stories or poems. This week we’ve covered nouns/verbs/adjectives, speech marks and adverb-start sentences. We use the sentence train to help us to build on our sentences and increase our vocabulary.

BOT NEWS

I’m thinking about BEING ON THE BOARD.  So what do I do???

We’ll call for nominations in mid-July. If you’re interested, then simply put your name forward!

If there are less than 5 people keen, then they become the board without a vote.

If there are more than 5 people keen, then there is a vote on 7th September by the school parents.

The 5 people with the most votes become the board for 3 years (along with the Principal & a staff rep).

The first board meeting is the 19th September, where the new board will elect a Chair.

July will be here before you know it!  Have you considered throwing your hat in the ring??

Keep an eye out for BEING ON THE BOARD in upcoming newsletters for more information.

Pirinoa Playgroup

Pirinoa Playgroup have loved being back together after a nice Christmas break.

First day back we had to cancel because of some pesky wasps had moved in and then we had to cancel our beach day due to stormy weather! But we persevered and have enjoyed lots of fun time together.

After our last meeting we had decided to refresh our books and with help from Chicken and Frog bookstore in Featherston we have been enjoying some beautiful new stories.

We’ve had a bit of a move around inside which our little friends were excited to explore. But making the most of this weather we have definitely been spending the majority of our time playing outside.

We’re looking forward to our first visit from Shirley at REAP on 8th March. She always brings lots of fun learning opportunities!
As always, if you want to call in for a coffee you are more than welcome. We are here (right next to the school) on Tuesday mornings during term time from 9am til 11.30. Check us out on Facebook, or contact Hanna on 0274205696.
